2010 Classical Music for Kids Program: “Beethoven's Sketchbook”

  • Availability: January 4 to March 31, 2010
  • Run time: 45 minutes
  • Audience Size: Maximum of 300 audience members/performance

The American Classical Orchestra presents an interactive program that introduces students to the music of Ludwig von Beethoven. Maestro Thomas Crawford, conductor of the American Classical Orchestra, together with virtuoso pianist Dr. Adam Kent, will lead the children through the miracle of the creative process. Beethoven worked tirelessly, writing many sketches and revising them often. “Beethoven's Sketchbook” provides an informative and fun exploration of some of the greatest music ever written.

“I carry my ideas a long time, rejecting and rewriting until I am satisfied. Since I am conscious of what I want, I never lose sight of the fundamental idea. It rises higher and higher until I see the image of it, rounded and complete, standing there before my mental vision.” Ludwig von Beethoven

“Beethoven's Sketchbook” is designed for students in grades three through twelve. Participating teachers will receive, in advance, a Teacher's Guide to help them prepare their students for the Classical Music for Kids (CMK) program. In conjunction with the Teacher's Guide, teachers can encourage their students before attending the performance to write their own music using sketches by Beethoven or sketches of their own. During the in-school program, the students will view pictures of actual Beethoven sketches, participate in a question and answer period with the professional musicians, and will enjoy listening to live selections from some of Beethoven's piano masterpieces.

Program features:

  • Maestro Crawford shows pictures of actual Beethoven sketches and helps the students do the detective work to find the melodies on the page. Audio samples are played.
  • Dr. Adam Kent performs live portions of Beethoven's most famous piano works such as the “Moonlight,” “Appasionata,” and “Pathetique.”
  • Students sing “Ode to Joy” from the Ninth Symphony.
  • An interactive session for learning about the inner ear shows how Beethoven was able to continue to compose even after becoming deaf.
